How much information about an ordinary irreducible character determines the character? I will discuss this question for the symmetric and alternating groups, with a focus on two interpretations of ‘information’: the values on p’-classes, and the zero values. Interest in the zeros of a character date back to Burnside, while our question in the case of values on p’-classes also tells us about the modular representation theory of the group: characters agreeing on p’-classes corresponds to equal rows in the decomposition matrix. In the case of the alternating group, I will highlight an apparent connection between these two determination problems that is the subject on ongoing work.
