Simulation of void collapse in heterogeneous explosives

Abstract
The presence of cavities in explosives is known to sensitize the material and cause ignition where it wouldn’t occur if the voids were not present. Numerical simulations of shock-induced air-bubble collapse in water present the dominant physical mechanisms present in the collapse process, while multiple bubble cluster simulations provide a picture of the interactions of the collapse of neighbouring cavities. This provides a strong basis to approaching the level of understanding the physical mechanisms that contribute to the start of ignition in heterogeneous explosives.
