Metal-organic frameworks for chemistry and medicine - Can we design them?

Abstract
Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) offer some of the most exciting and innovative new materials available at the present time, and have attracted particular attention for their gas adsorption and storage properties with wide-ranging potential applications in chemistry and biology. An interesting recent discussion has been how big a part (if any) ‘design’ plays their synthesis. In this presentation I will discuss our recent work in preparing MOFs for applications such as novel types of protecting groups in organic synthesis, super selective gas adsorbers and medical delivery agents. Along the way I will discuss if we can claim any of these materials have been designed.
