What Really Makes an Accretion Disk MAD

Abstract
The concept of a Magnetically Arrested Disk (MAD) is interesting because it provides a way to maximize the extraction of spin energy from the central black hole, potentially powering jets. But how and whether they can be formed in nature is controversial. I will discuss some basic physical ideas underpinning MADs and argue that they may be relatively easy to form and maintain, but not quite in the way proponents have suggested. In addition to being a key element in modeling results from the Event Horizon Telescope, MADs may be crucial for solving a number of longstanding puzzles in accretion disk theory.
