MMVW01 - Summer School on Mathematics of Movement

We present results of modelling collective ant behaviour as an interacting active particle system. We show results of stability analysis, time-dependent simulations of the large particle/mean field limit PDE and finite element approximations of stationary solutions for the same PDE . We show that there is a phase transition between spots and lanes, depending on the speeds of the particles and the sensitivity towards the pheromone field through which the particles interact. Modelling the ants as having antennas seems to be crucial for ant movement. Volume exclusion is not taken into account.
