Talk A - Register Variation and Its Effects on Historical Linguistic Data
- 👤 Speaker: Morgan Macleod - Department of Linguistics
- 📅 Date & Time: Monday 14 June 2010, 17:00 - 18:00
- 📍 Venue: GR-04, English Faculty Building
Abstract
Linguistic variation resulting from differences in register is relatively easy to detect in periods for which there are extremely large corpora of texts whose context is well understood; however, in periods when the corpora for a given language is more restricted, identifying the factors responsible for observed variation can be more difficult. The focus of this talk will be on morphosyntactic variation and the empirical issues involved in determining its nature, and in particular on certain types of variation occurring in Old English.
Series This talk is part of the Linguistics PhD seminars series.
