Dementia is a growing worldwide issue causing a huge social and economic burden. On top of cognitive issues, people living with dementia often develop behavioural and psychological symptoms, sometimes so severe that patients need to be cared for in specialist mental health wards. However, there is very little research on the need of these patients, their access to palliative care, or their outcomes after discharge. We will discuss whether machine learning can be used to stratify patients based on their likely outcome at their time of arrival to the ward, therefore opening up possibilities for better, tailored care.
