Abstract
Surfactants are a magic class of molecule wherein two opposing solubilities coexist within the same molecular structure. This unique character underpins a host of interesting behaviours exhibited by surfactants, from reducing surface tension to self-assembly. Surfactants are thus key and widespread components in many household formulations such as cosmetics and engine oils. I will present findings on the self-assembly of two industrially relevant surfactants, methods for controlling this behaviour and the techniques used to characterise them.
