Abstract
Children and young people’s mental health was a public health priority even before the pandemic, in large part due to increases in the number presenting to healthcare services with a mental health problem. I shall show trends in mental healthcare use in children and young people in the decade before the pandemic, identifying likely clinical trajectories after first contact. I shall then show trends in mental health symptoms in young people, as measured by high-quality population surveys. Then, using a mixture of methods, including causal mediation analysis, I shall discuss potential reasons for the increase and speculate on where we should go next.
