Abstract
Turbulent mixing plays a key role in driving the thermohaline circulation of the deep ocean. Field observations have suggested that this mixing is locally intensified over the rough topography along the boundaries of the ocean. I will present new laboratory experiments investigating the transport of salinity and tracer in a system in which one region is subject to intensified mixing and in which there are supplied salinity fluxes to the top and bottom surfaces. This talk will present findings along with a simple, theoretical model and discuss the implications.
