Abstract
The notion of completely reducible (cr for short) subgroups of an algebraic group G was introduced by Serre in the 1990s. Such a G-cr subgroup is a natural generalisation of a subgroup of GL(V) acting completely reducibly on V. Many general results were proved by Bate, Martin, Roehrle and others on G-cr subgroups. My research has focused on classifying connected reductive subgroups of algebraic groups, with complete reducibility giving a polarisation of the problem into different flavour subproblems. After discussing these topics in general, I will discuss ongoing work with Alastair Litterick on how to use these classifications (and subgroup structure information in general) to improve general results on completely reducible subgroups to small characteristics.
