Shock and Impact Deformation: A Geological Perspective

Abstract
Impacts have shaped our world and the Solar System. These collisions gave birth to the Moon, caused the extinction of the dinosaurs, and delivered the essential ingredients for life on Earth. High-speed impacts generate shock waves that suddenly subject materials to extreme pressures and temperatures, producing extreme deformation. In this talk, I will discuss recent advancements—from observations, experiments, and shock physics modelling—in understanding the deformation of rocks under the extreme conditions of impact loading and the large-scale planetary consequences of that deformation.
