Abstract
We begin an investigation of a new covariant entropy bound in gravity, the Holographic Covariant Entropy Bound (HCEB). It is the maximum entropy flowing through a codimension-two surface consistent with the intrinsic geometry and extrinsic curvatures on the surface. This bound arises from the recently proposed Cauchy slice holography: it counts the number of states flowing in a holographically dual theory that lives on a Cauchy slice. In the case of pure GR with spherical symmetry, it is related to the Hawking mass. It constitutes a significant improvement to an “entropy=area” formula: the HCEB remains finite even as we approach the singularity and the area approaches zero. We also discuss the case with matter, where there is a bound only for certain classes of surfaces, and outline implications for tensor networks and the black hole information paradox.
