Abstract
The Grothendieck ring of varieties is the free abelian group generated by algebraic varieties modulo a ‘cut and paste’ relation. The definition can be motivated by the study of certain numerical invariants of algebraic varieties. After giving basic examples and calculations, I will introduce generating functions in the Grothendieck ring of various flavours. They are related to the Zeta function, Weil conjecture, and recursive structures of some moduli spaces in algebraic geometry.
