Abstract
While the basic principles of assessment are over 3,000 years old, in Cambridge it dates from 1887 when James McKeen Cattell obtained facilities for its study within the Cavendish Physics Laboratory. This talk will review its progress since then, focusing on evolution in our understanding of the four psychometric principles of reliability, validity, standardisation and equivalence. The finale will look at the state of the art today, where item response theory, computer adaptive testing and the internet come together to spark a new revolution.
