Abstract
Locomotion at a small scale through a complex ambient material is explored in the case where the yield stress, or plasticity, of the ambient is a dominant feature. Various classical models for locomotion (squirmers, undulating cylinders, helical motion) are revisited in this case, and explored and analysed using numerical and theoretical modelling. Some implications for real swimmers, and comparisons with experiments, are discussed.
