Abstract
Having spent time reading dusty and faded manuscripts of medieval wills, court proceedings and private papers, I have attempted to reconstruct an incident that happened in one family of gentry, where the mother was fighting with her daughters-in-law over family estates. The twists and turns of this story give some insight into the life of medieval women, who often were hostages of circumstance but found ways to achieve their ends.
