Oxygenic photosynthesis supports the majority of Earthโ€™s ecosystems; however, when compared to other metabolic processes, lifeโ€™s ability to harness solar energy, reduce CO2 , and oxidize water emerged relatively late. Instead, earlier ecosystems were powered by water-rock reactions. This talk will discuss the ecology of rock-powered ecosystems and how these observations provide important constraints for the search for life in the universe.
