Abstract
Can physics really be mathematically “proved” from first principles? And why is this question interesting at all? The “mathematical treatment of the axioms of physics” was one of Hilbert’s grand goals; it remains the core of mathematical physics and has been intensively studied for probability theory, statistical mechanics, quantum mechanics, quantum field theory… I will explain Hilbert’s question and then focus more specifically on “the problem of developing mathematically the limiting processes [...] which lead from the atomistic view to the laws of motion of continua”.
