Abstract
A basic problem in geometry asks about ‘transformation groups’, the (very large) groups of all possible symmetries of spaces like discs or spheres. For instance, one can ask whether or not they are simple as abstract groups. In the world of volume-preserving symmetries, something unique happens in real dimension two, connected to the `geometry of area’. I’ll try and give an overview of some of these results.
