Fire design of concrete structures
- 👤 Speaker: Professor Luc TAERWE (Ghent University, Belgium)
- 📅 Date & Time: Friday 06 November 2009, 16:00 - 17:00
- 📍 Venue: Engineering Department -LR5
Abstract
Fire resistance becomes an increasingly important aspect in structural design. Concrete structures have a significant inherent resistance to fire without special measures have to be taken. In general, they also show a sufficient robustness which prevents premature collapse. In many cases they can be reused after a fire with only minor repair or strengthening. In the lecture all these aspects are discussed by means of several unique examples of real fires and the results of large scale fire tests. The basic design approaches according to the Eurocodes will be explained and attention will be paid to the overall structural response which influences the boundary conditions of structural members.
