Abstract
This will be a rather informal seminar, and aims to explore areas of common interest. To stimulate the discussion, I will present a few examples. On one hand, the use of optical traps with closed feedback control over the position of colloidal scale (micron sized) objects, and the types of experiments that have been possible with that system over the last few years. On the other hand, a new cart-pole realisation that we have deployed last term in the 2nd year undergraduate physics lab, with PID control of three interesting dynamical states (one of which very unusual!). This cart-pole platform is also being used in the research lab to test out the possibilities of real-time model-free reinforcement learning.
The seminar will be held in the JDB Seminar Room, Department of Engineering, and online (zoom): https://newnham.zoom.us/j/92544958528?pwd=YS9PcGRnbXBOcStBdStNb3E0SHN1UT09
