"It didn't feel like schoolwork at all": Learning English through picturebooks

Abstract
The seminar reports on and discusses a collaborative pilot study of using authentic picturebooks in English with Norwegian 6th graders. The study is based on a reading project involving two teacher trainees, a class of Norwegian 6th graders and their teacher. The study draws on classroom-based research and evidence-based practice, as well as current motivational theory, picturebook research and theories of second language learning.
Anna Birketveit is a senior lecturer in English at Bergen University College, with a special research interest in children’s literature as a vehicle for foreign language learning.
