Abstract
PPM (Prediction by Partial Match) is a family of techniques for language modelling and text compression which have been used extensively in programs such as Dasher. I’ll review the algorithm and some of the variations, highlight some of the issues, and talk about the relation to hierarchical Dirichlet processes and how we might use these to improve upon PPM ’s weaknesses.
This is early work very much “in progress” so the talk may be short in order to leave plenty of time for audience participation – questions and hopefully suggestions!
