Malle has conjectured an asymptotic formula for the number of number fields with given Galois group and bounded discriminant, but this conjecture does not include a leading constant. In this talk I will describe a conjectural interpretation for the leading constant, based on an analogy with Manin’s conjecture on the number of rational points of bounded height on varieties. A novel object which explains some surprising properties of the leading constant is the (partially) unramified Brauer group of a finite group.
