Melting ice sheets, record ocean temperatures, unprecedented flooding and droughts: An increasing occurrence of extremes in ice, ocean and atmospheric conditions raises questions about their causes, connections, and climate impacts. Combining a comprehensive set of observations with innovative statistical approaches and theory, I will present key drivers of change in the amplitude, frequency, and character of ocean and atmospheric variability over the last 70 years. I will discuss changes in the identified drivers over time, the underlying mechanisms, and critical thresholds. The findings open new possibilities for predictions of European weather on timescales from seasons to multi-decades.
