Abstract
Evidence for meiotic sex is found in all the major eukaryotic radiations and hence was presumably practiced by the most recent common eukaryotic ancestor. Despite their myriad phenotypic manifestations, basal sexual strategies can be identified, providing insights into the nature of this ancestor and grounding our understanding of speciation.
