Abstract
Recent Australian-led field campaigns in East Antarctica and the Southern Ocean have provided a wealth of cloud, precipitation and aerosol data which we are using to understand the unique microphysical processes in this region. The data are invaluable for the evaluation and improvement of a range of forecast and climate models, including the UM. These campaigns took place to help address the persistent large uncertainties in surface radiation in climate models this region. In this talk, I will discuss some recent research highlights and focus on linking our observations directly to model evaluation and improvement. I shall also describe future field campaigns and the science questions we seek to answer.
