Abstract
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is the most prevalent endocrine disorder affecting women, characterized by hyperandrogenism and metabolic disturbances. Daughters of women with PCOS are exposed to elevated androgen levels during two critical developmental windows: prenatal life and puberty. This “double hit” may disrupt key brain networks, particularly the prefrontal cortex and limbic system, impairing social cognition and increasing vulnerability to mental health issues. Using a translational approach, this presentation will go through animal and human models that explore the impact of androgen exposure on behavior, brain connectivity, and gene expression. Our findings aim to reveal biomarkers and mechanisms driving these effects, paving the way for early identification and interventions for at-risk individuals.
