Psychometric Test Construction

Abstract
Questionnaire and test development involves both qualitative and quantitative aspects. Experimental and survey design each make very high demands in regard to replicability and accuracy, and psychometric methodology aims to maximize both of these properties in our research tools. This session addresses the process of developing an assessment instrument. The stages: defining the purpose, building the specification, item and question writing, the pilot study, item analysis, assessing reliability, obtaining evidence of validity, deciding what needs to go into the manual, are all examined from a practical perspective. At the end of this session you should have a reasonable idea about how to construct your own test, and a familiarity with common pitfalls and procedures.
