Abstract
A complete, independent set of local unitary invariants for an n-party system would enable one to characterise all the types of entanglement that could occur in that system. Unfortunately, it is hard to come up with such a set, even for pure qubit states, and this has only been done for n <=4. The number of invariants grows exponentially with n, so the enterprise looks a bit daunting. I will describe a set of 2^n invariants that accounts for about half of them. Furthermore, the set of invariants has a simple hierarchical structure. There is also a hint as to how one might go looking for the other half.
