The exciting season of provocative and rarely screened films opens with a memorable classic from the Golden Age of Mexican cinema.

‘Set at the height of the revolutionary violence and instability the film follows the intricate forging of allegiances by the landowning elite during the struggle between Zapatista revolutionaries and Federalist troops. The mordant exploration of personal loyalty and betrayal between ‘hacendado’ and zapatista soldier dramatizes a pointed commentary on the self-interested ambivalence of the Mexican middle-class during the revolutionary years. The film was regarded as problematic by the government of the time and was ‘rediscovered’ in the 1960s.’
