Olga Grinchenko (Oxford) “Some Calendrical Features of the Slavonic Kontakaria”

The paper deals with Slavonic liturgical manuscripts called Kontakaria (late 11th to 13th centuries). Each Slavonic manuscript contains a number of commemorations and liturgical feasts. Although none of Slavonic manuscripts maintain a pure tradition of a certain liturgical order but, feature a mixture of various elements, it is of use and great interest to trace the influence of different calendrical archetypes in order to determine the original content of the Slavonic sources and their relationship to the Greek prototypes, and extend our knowledge of the links between pre-Mongol Russia and Byzantium.

Alexandra Vukovich (Cambridge) “Concord and Reconciliation as Iconographic and Literary Themes in the ‘Life of Queen Helen’ by Archbishop Daniel II”

The ‘Life of Queen Helen’ is a narrative source describing the reign of Queen Helen and those of her sons, Milutin and Dragutin, in the late medieval Balkans. The text functions as an encomium to the late queen and is translated visually in the iconographic programmes of monastic churches founded by the Nemanjid princes. This paper will discuss the iconographic and literary themes of concord and reconciliation and their relevance to the dynastic integrity of the Nemanjid kingdom.
