Comparisons of the temperature tolerance of marine species from different latitudes can tell us which individuals, species and communities are most sensitive to change. These comparisons can be used to test the mechanisms underlying large scale physiological and ecological patterns, e.g. the “climate variability hypotheses”. I will give a summary of recent latitudinal comparisons both within and outside Antarctica: 1) between McMurdo Sound and Marguerite Bay, 2) between Antarctic, temperate and tropical environments.
