Abstract
Quantum invariants such as the Jones polynomial have reshaped our understanding of knot theory, revealingunexpected connections between algebra, geometry, and physics. Their development goes hand-in-handwith major advances in (modular) Lie theory, including quantum groups, Hecke algebras, and their categorifiedanalogs. In this visual talk, I will reflect on how the evolution of low-dimensional topology led me to seriouslyconsider the question in the title, and I will even share some partial answers.
