Abstract
The general problem of determining necessary and sufficient conditions for a matrix A to be diagonally stable is currently unsolved, and there is a great deal of research in progress in this area. A recent result due to Shorten and Narendra, which expresses the condition of Redheffer in a convenient form, makes the problem considerably more tractable. In this lecture, using this result, some of the difficult questions that arise in the general problem are examined.
