Galaxies do not form in isolation, they grow within the large scale filaments, which affect their formation and evolution. However, the extent to which the filaments shape galaxies has not been yet understood. Particularly, how the proximity to filaments affects the ability of galaxies to accrete gas to sustain their star formation. Moreover, the orientation of a galaxy with respect to the filament can provide important insights into its intrinsic properties. In this talk, I will present the results from the state-of-art radio survey MIGHTEE -HI conducted with the MeerKAT radio telescope (an SKA pathfinder) and show how observations of neutral hydrogen in galaxies are instrumental to enhance our knowledge of galaxies growth, as well as shed the light on the star formation histories (SFHs) of spiral galaxies in relation to their large scale environment.
