Abstract
From unsettled to convivial conservation: how to marry radical critique and radical alternatives?
It has become a truism that we live in dangerous, unprecedented times. The most radical movements responding to this moment, however, seem to be promoting increasingly authoritarian ways forward. Many other actors, including in conservation, seem hesitant to part with or even critique capitalist business-as-usual, even though many feel more radical action is needed in the face of dire biodiversity, climate and social crises. All this is deeply unsettling for conservation actors, but also leading to new alliances, actions and imaginaries.
A key question going forward, therefore, is: how to renew radical critiques of capitalist conservation while simultaneously imagining, organizing and promoting radical conservation alternatives? In this seminar, Professor Bram Büscher will reflect on the tensions between marrying radical critiques and radical alternatives in conservation and explore potential methods and platforms that push both of these, including convivial conservation.
