Abstract
Strong empirical evidence demonstrates that a communicative technological extraterrestrial is unlikely to exist now within 500 light-years of Earth or to have passed within 100 light-years of Earth during the past few billion years. The evidence is based on numerous sky surveys at various electromagnetic wavelengths that date back ~100 years, and on the absence of an alien probe in Earth orbit.
