Abstract
The paper brings together discussions in social history, political history, and legal history to assess the making and impact of cardinal legislation for the settlement of the poor. Starting from an eighteenth-century case study, the paper will branch out to examine how influential legislation was made and modified, and what impact key provisions had on family and community life.
