Abstract
In his talk he will use the notion of community as an interpretive lens to address the role that comprehensive secondary education is playing as a mechanism for expanding democracy under conditions of globalization. The talk will explore three challenges currently facing secondary education: who should the high school serve; what programs should the high school offer; and the purpose of the high school. While his focus will be on the United States, he will make reference to the struggle for comprehensive education in Britain and where the current academies movement and other privatization schemes fit in.
