Trial-by-trial variations in brain activity modulate the response of the brain to external stimulation and can predict fluctuations in conscious awareness. I will present a series of experiments in which we show how fluctuations in conscious awareness arise from the global pre-stimulus state of the brain in different experimental paradigms (multi-stable perception, perceptual awareness at the visual threshold). Given the intricate link between brain and body, I take this paradigm a step further and show how cyclic variations in bodily signals across the cardiac and respiratory phase and the mode of breathing can likewise modulate awareness-related brain activity and so contribute to awareness.
