Abstract
Electric Heavy Goods Vehicles (eHGVs) represent a critical pathway to decarbonising freight transport, but long-term battery performance and lifespan remain key challenges in terms of de -risking eHGV acquisition for the operators. This presentation details a project investigating the degradation mechanisms in eHGV battery packs, moving beyond simplified laboratory testing to reflect real-world operational profiles. A data-driven approach has been employed, beginning with comprehensive data acquisition from in-service eHGVs to characterise actual usage patterns. This field data informs the development of representative drive cycles for laboratory testing of lithium-ion cells. A key focus of the recent experimental work is the impact of prolonged vibration exposure -and attempting to determine if this is a significant factor in cell degradation. The resulting experimental data will be used to validate and refine physics-based battery degradation models, ultimately enabling more accurate predictions of battery life and informing strategies for optimised battery management and second-life applications in this demanding sector.
