Abstract

Internet voting – or at least the possibility of Internet voting – is on the lips of legislators and election officials across the US and around the world, including in the UK. But what does Internet voting really mean – is it registering online, requesting a ballot online, printing a blank ballot online, or casting your vote online? Will Internet voting really save money and increase participation? What are the risks of voting online, and how can we mitigate those risks? How does identity validation relate to Internet voting? What can we learn from other technologies that have moved online? How do we (and should we) answer the frequently asked question ‘if I can bank online and shop online, why can’t I vote online’? This talk will address these questions and more on one of the hottest topics at the intersection of technology and public policy.
