‘Milton’s Mulberry’ explores the rich history of the ancient black mulberry tree in the Fellow’s Garden of Christ’s College, Cambridge. Intertwining horticulture, poetry, and politics, it traces King James I’s failed silk industry, Milton’s radical legacy, and the tree’s role in college life today. We follow Milton’s journey from his formative years, through his association with Oliver Cromwell, to publishing his seminal work: Paradise Lost. The tree represents a powerful symbol of artistic expression, colonial enterprise, and enduring freedom of thought. All stories that remain relevant to our lives today.
