Abstract

This course is part of the Scientific Computing series.

Mathematica is a software package for numerical computation, symbolic manipulation and the production of graphics from mathematical functions and data. This course is for beginners and new users of the package and describes basic concepts and use of Mathematica.

Duration: One half day session

Format: Self-paced practicals.

Prerequisites:

• Knowledge of matrix algebra and simple calculus (including simple ordinary differential equations (ODEs)) is assumed.
• Those attending should be able to use a plain text editor (e.g. emacs, gedit, pico, vi) on a Unix system as might be obtained from the Emacs or Vi introductory courses.

• User interface
• Mathematica language and syntax
• Functions
• Plotting simple graphs
• Input/Output
• Solving a simple ordinary differential equation (ODE)

System requirements: Mathematica v. 7 on PWF Linux

Notes:

• No attempt is made to teach mathematical techniques.
• Attendees may also be interested in the “Mathematica: Graphics” and “Mathematica: Linear Algebra” courses.
