Influence of strain gradients on the deformation of strain-softening material
- 👤 Speaker: Professor John Willis, DAMPT
- 📅 Date & Time: Friday 21 May 2010, 14:00 - 15:00
- 📍 Venue: Oatley Seminar Room, Department of Engineering
Abstract
Recent general theory of Fleck and Willis is specialised to a case of material which softens at high strain. The effects of softening are mitigated by strain-gradient terms which may be either “energetic” or “dissipative” in character. Difficulties encountered during the study of the stability of uniform simple shear deformation required the development of an approach which, while standard for general studies of stability, is somewhat unfamiliar (and usually unnecessary) in the context of rate-independent plasticity.
