I will describe experimental and theoretical results relating to the question of how unicellular and simple multicellular organisms interact and coordinate their motion. In particular, I will focus on the mechanism by which multicellular organisms composed of thousands of cells exhibit accurate phototaxis in the absence of a central nervous system, how flagella of such organisms synchronize, and how population behaviour is influenced by hydrodynamic interactions between individual organisms.
