Nanoplasmonics: Classical oscillator physics at the nanoscale
- đ¤ Speaker: Prof. Stefan Maier, Experimental Solid State Group Department of Physics Imperial College London
- đ Date & Time: Friday 18 June 2010, 14:00 - 15:00
- đ Venue: Pippard Lecture Theatre, Cavendish Laboratory
Abstract
This talk will focus on new developments in nanoparticle-based plasmonics. Metal nanoparticles are physically realizable classical oscillator systems at the nanoscale. Knowing how to clever couple masses on springs thus allows us to create ultrasmall optical cavities with desired radiative properties, from sub- to superradiance and the emergence of Fano resonances. The fundamental physics of these processes will be addressed, as will be important examples of applications, ranging from optical sensing to control over nanoscale light emitters. Additionally, a brief overview of other activities within the nanoplasmonics group at Imperial College will be provided.
