Abstract
Laser cooling relies on applying velocity selective optical forces on an ensemble of atoms to increase an atomic sample’s phase space density, thereby cooling the atoms. In nearly all laser cooling schemes used so far, both the velocity selectivity and the radiation forces were accomplished using optical transitions that couple ground atomic states to excited states. In this talk I will present some of our recent work on laser cooling using multi-photon and excited state transitions. I will discuss some unexpected observations in a two-color Magneto-Optical Trap, and the applicability of similar techniques to laser cooling of certain “difficult” atoms, such as (anti)hydrogen.
